Second graders employed the Engineering Design Process to solve the problem of Sam the boating gummy worm who had an unfortunate accident. He forgot to put on his life preserver and his boat capsized. He was left on top, his preserver under the boat! Using only two paper clips, (and no hands!) the students needed to get the preserver on Sam without stabbing him! Each student started working independently and then teamed up to save Sam. The benefit of working with a partner was to have more paper clips to use and also combining what worked for each. Some of the strategies used were to enlarge the opening of the life preserver to better slip onto Sam. As a follow up, the students wrote up the experience with illustrations.
